Piste view in Tirol

So with temperature measured in a static weather station coming in at a frigid -23c and wind chill from skiing taking it far below that, the Piste View camera hardware was put through its paces last weekend. As you can see from the video the scenery and conditions were excellent and you can get a great feel for skiing through the excellent Serfaus ski area. We hope you get a feel for the great sensation that is unique to skiing and snowboarding (without the frost bite of course).

Snow for Piste View

Without snow the concept would be ‘incline view’, ‘path view’ or some other variant of a way down a mountain and some way short on emotion. As it is we deal with the breathtaking environment of snow covered mountains and the capture of the thrill of descending these irreplaceable, euphoria-giving beasts on film. So it is that snow is forecast for the coming days on the Austrian glaciers and whilst snow is ‘any season’ welcome we are not sure how the filming is going to work on a 3000m+ glacier in early summer snowfall. That said we will be on the Stubai Glacier on the 2nd June 2011 to begin the lengthy process of capturing this unique, mighty and incomparable terrain. 7 years of wrestling with cameras on the mountain and we are there

When a lunch box was attached to a kayak helmet back in 2004, it really wasn’t planned that Piste View would become a 7 year project to film the slopes. In 2011 we are now ready to complete the task of filming the slopes in superb quality HD format. Filming on the Austrian glaciers is set to begin next week as pilot projects, we will post the results right here.

Latest test of the Piste View hardware

Just finished the latest design changes and tested them above Innsbruck – the hardware that is set to be adapted for snow use showed great promise. There are a number of easy tweaks that were spotted but yes a great test day, even if there was no snow on the ground!

Piste View – getting closer

We have been doing Piste Views for many years now and are now within reach of the illusive steadycam shots of the ski pistes as you and I see them. I think we are on version 8 now and all is set for a spring filming fest with the higher Austrian resorts as well as the glaciers set to be filmed. Lots of testing over this winter and continual refinements but I really think we are there now.

A ski through the Zillertal Arena

Taken last year using a helmet camera the video shows s ski from Zell am Ziller, through Gerlos, into Konigsleiten and over the ski bridge into the start of the Hochkrimml ski area.

Solden Blue 38 – Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers ski tunnel

So here it is – the first Piste View video albeit using the old camera and hardware, you get the idea though. Blue 38 piste in Solden links the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers through a ski tunnel.

Piste view – filming the ski pistes of the world

So the weather is right and we are ready to go. The glaciers in Austria are in great shape and after a few more tweaks we will be ready to start the project to film the ski pistes of the Austrian Alps. From there we head out in all directions:)
